Firebase
Google's app development platform with backend as a service.
About
Overview
Firebase is Google's comprehensive app development platform. It provides a suite of backend services—including Firestore (NoSQL database), Authentication, Cloud Functions, and Hosting—allowing developers to build, release, and monitor apps quickly.
Pricing & Free Tier
Free Tier (Spark): Yes. Generous limits including 1GB Firestore storage, 10GB Hosting, and 50k monthly authentications.
Blaze Plan: Pay-as-you-go. You only pay for usage that exceeds the free tier (e.g., $0.18 per 100k Firestore reads).
How to Use
- Go to the Firebase Console and create a new project.
- Install the Firebase CLI via npm:
npm install -g firebase-tools - Run
firebase initin your project folder to connect it. - Use the Firebase SDK in your frontend (React, Flutter, iOS) to interact with Auth and Firestore.
Important Notes
- Vendor Lock-in: Migrating away from Firebase (especially Firestore) to another provider is notoriously difficult due to proprietary APIs.
- Billing Shock: The Blaze plan is pay-as-you-go. A poorly written database query (e.g., a loop that reads thousands of documents) can result in a massive bill.
