About

Overview

Firebase is Google's comprehensive app development platform. It provides a suite of backend services—including Firestore (NoSQL database), Authentication, Cloud Functions, and Hosting—allowing developers to build, release, and monitor apps quickly.

Pricing & Free Tier

Free Tier (Spark): Yes. Generous limits including 1GB Firestore storage, 10GB Hosting, and 50k monthly authentications.
Blaze Plan: Pay-as-you-go. You only pay for usage that exceeds the free tier (e.g., $0.18 per 100k Firestore reads).

How to Use

  1. Go to the Firebase Console and create a new project.
  2. Install the Firebase CLI via npm: npm install -g firebase-tools
  3. Run firebase init in your project folder to connect it.
  4. Use the Firebase SDK in your frontend (React, Flutter, iOS) to interact with Auth and Firestore.

Important Notes

  • Vendor Lock-in: Migrating away from Firebase (especially Firestore) to another provider is notoriously difficult due to proprietary APIs.
  • Billing Shock: The Blaze plan is pay-as-you-go. A poorly written database query (e.g., a loop that reads thousands of documents) can result in a massive bill.
