Overview
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the latest version of Google's web analytics platform. Unlike its predecessor (Universal Analytics), GA4 uses an event-based data model rather than sessions, allowing for cross-platform tracking (web and app) and AI-powered predictive metrics.
Pricing & Free Tier
Free Tier: Yes. Free up to 10 million hits per property per month.
Google Analytics 360: Enterprise tier starting at roughly $50,000/year for advanced data freshness and BigQuery export.
How to Use
- Go to analytics.google.com and create a new Property.
- Set up a Data Stream for your website and copy the Measurement ID.
- Install the Google tag (gtag.js) on your website, or use Google Tag Manager.
- Use the "Realtime" report to verify data is flowing, then check "Reports" for user behavior.
Important Notes
- Learning Curve: GA4 is vastly different from Universal Analytics. The UI is less intuitive, and standard reports like "Bounce Rate" have been replaced by "Engagement Rate."
- Data Retention: By default, the free tier only retains user data for 2 months. You must change this to 14 months in the settings immediately after setup.
